2018 Pinot Noir

2018 Pinot Noir – Riverbench Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley – 13.4% abv

Nose (aromas): wet stone, orange peel, pomegranate, crushed herb

Flavor (palate): salted plum, dried citrus peel, oyster mushroom

Winemaker’s Notes: This vintage plays more to the savory aspect of Pinot Noir, with umami characteristics superseding fruit. It is bright while young, but given a little more time to age, it will happily reward you with even more aroma and flavor depth. Food pairings with this Pinot include plank grilled salmon, wild mushroom risotto, duck breast, or even grilled quail. As far as cheeses go, try a delicious gruyere, or virtually any sheep’s milk cheese!

Ageing Potential: Now-2026+

Additional Info: This year’s Pinot Noir is 100% Riverbench, clones 667 and Pommard. The fun part about having a single vineyard wine is that it expresses that place, at that time, in that vintage. This is a subtle wine in many senses, but just spend some time with it in the glass and it will reward you. The softer mouthfeel and lighter color perfectly encapsulate this sub-section of the Santa Maria A.V.A., as does the more earth and spice-driven flavor profile.
