2019 Carhartt Venture™ Buffalo


Santa Ynez Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley  -14.1% abv

Composition: 100% Cinsaut

Nose (aromas): shaded wild raspberry, coffee bean, herbal undertones

Flavor (palate): underripe plum, black tea, hint of orange peel

Winemaker’s notes: The fifth vintage of Buffalo is back and more interesting than ever. This wine’s playful yet powerful body showcases the true potential of the Cinsaut grape. Crushable as ever, this vintage can be consumed on its own, but will equally shine with spicy Indian food, or even simple bbq chicken. I encourage experimentation with this one! 

Ageing Potential: Now – 2025 (safe window to retain freshness)

Additional Notes: This wine was fermented whole berry with native yeasts. It was then aged on its lees (in neutral oak) for 6 months. This vintage is from a new vineyard in the Happy Canyon AVA, and I have to say, it is far and away my favorite. Bring this wine to a dinner party and blind taste it. You will no doubt have the crowd “buffaloed.”

The 2019 Buffalo is far and away my favorite vintage. Much darker in color and more concentrated on the palate than past vintages, I feel as if this wine would go toe to toe with the best Cinsaut the world has to offer (at least what I have had the fortune of trying). Although it is slightly “bigger” than past expressions, it still finds its place as a summertime chillable red, ready to take on any cuisine! – Chase Carhartt
